Do Amber Teething Necklaces Work? (I don't care.)
>> Monday, August 9, 2010
About a month ago a company called Inspired by Finn sent me an amber teething necklace to review. The first day I got it I anxiously put it around Addy's drool-filled little neck. I waited for the magic. Nothing of note ever happened. Except it was pretty fun to put a necklace on her, because no matter if they work or not they're cute. (Isn't that what really matters?)
But a month ago Addy wasn't really teething. I thought she was. I've thought she was teething since she was a week old--it became a running joke with my mother-in-law, every time I brought her over, at one month, two months, three months, four, I'd walk in the door and say, "Ok. Now she's really teething." And she never was; she was just a baby with a penchant for fist-gnawing.
But three days ago the fist-gnawing turned into full-blown, picture-perfect TEETHING. Addy could have been in an Orajel commercial. She'd stare down anything put within a ten-foot radius of her face, and as soon as it was in grasping distance she'd reach, clasp down, and pull it into her mouth like it was magnetized, like if she couldn't chomp down on it--and hard--right that very second the world would implode.
That and the drooling. The leaky faucet that is now Adelyn's mouth is incessantly running, dripping, filling up every bib in the bib drawer.
Even her nose started running yesterday morning. I freaked out, of course, and called the doctor. She said it can be a sign of teething--although I know there's some controversy about that, and we have an appointment tomorrow so we can rule out anything else more serious.
And then the last straw, the final confirmation that this was finally it. Teething. The real stuff.
This morning Addy did the usual chomping down on my finger routine while I tried to get some work done and I felt it--a sharp little tooth edging its way through her bottom gum. (So, Janu, now I'm not just saying it. She's really, really teething this time. We have irrefutable evidence.)
And still, Addy's been sleeping through the night like a champ. Her naps have been shorter but it's becoming predictable again at night, this going to bed business. Jason and I have stopped bargaining over waking-up shifts, and we just sleep. (Life is so much better this way.)
Three nights ago I wrapped the amber teething necklace around her ankle, under a sock, before bed time. I'd stuffed it in a drawer and forgotten about it until then. And that's where it's remained at bedtime since.
Is it the reason she's sleeping through the night? Even with a little vampire-tooth making its debut? I have no idea. But I know it's not coming off.

OK, I could have written this post myself!!!!!! The exact same thing is happening here. I had thought my son was teething for months, but now I know he is. The dripping mouth, the extra knawing, and,... yes... a little razor sharp nub on the bottom. Finally, 9 months later, we have a tooth!!
Also, he is still sleeping through the night too. I wonder if boys canwear the amber teething necklaces?
Sejal, they can and its adorable!! I saw some about a month ago and the boys couldn't have been cuter. I am doing the sock thing also and didn't do it while we went out of town (then she got her first tooth) and she was incredibly fussy. I am starting it again today!
there you go :) a training bra can't be too far behind!! I love you both and I am so happy that tooth has finally reared it's pretty little edge.
Janu
