Congestion, Saline Drops, Snot and the Like. (Running on three hours of sleep makes it hard to think of a title for a post about Infants and Colds.)

Adelyn has her first real cold. Her poor little nose is equally congested and runny; she's got a mild cough and just generally doesn't seem like herself. Last night was one of the hardest yet--up at eleven and then not back down until three thirty in the morning. It took two bottles, a dozen shushing and rocking sequences, some Orajel, baby Tylenol, teething tablets, two diaper changes and an outfit switch until my three-a.m.-brain realized she can't sleep because her nose is stopped up. I should know this. I've suffered from allergies since I, too, was in a crib. After pulling out the bulb syringe she finally got some relief and we all got a little more sleep.

Today I went to the drugstore and bought every infant-cold remedy available. Boogey wipes? (Saline-infused wipes for the nose.) I'll take 'em.

I've tried just about every Google and pediatrician-recommended idea before bed tonight, including ten minutes in a steamy bathroom and baby Vicks Vapor rub. I would love any other tips, because I have no idea what I'm doing.

I do know that watching your baby suffer, whether it's from getting her six-month-shots or a rumbly stomach or a stuffy nose, is infinitely worse than going through it yourself.

Ella has had so much congestion from allergies and having bronchitis twice!! Try running a cool mist humidifer all night if you haven't all ready. I love the baby vicks. I hope she doesn't end up with bronchitis. How's her temperature been? Poor little Addie! Ella sends her love! Give her a kiss for me :)

I second the cool mist humidifier. And yes, it is infinitely worse. I dread the really big stuff that's sure to come when they're teenagers.

Naveen had his first cold areound 6 months. I did the humidifier, vicks, saline drops, bulb, vicks wall plug in. The only thing that worked was time. :(
It took about 1 FULL week for the symptoms to run their course and eventually they were gone. That's tough though, teething AND a cold. I feel for you.
On the teething side: I got this homeopathic med. at the grocery store call Camilia (in Canada) . It seems to work really well. Thought I'd share.
Good luck.

Hey Sarah
I'm a physical therapist and I work mostly with respiratory patients, and usually in my practice we use saline in a serynge (without the needle), push a few drop in each nostril, then with a hand under the baby's jaw we push it closed, this keeps the baby from inhaling through the mouth making her inhale through the nose, which will make the snot move from her nose down to her mouth, once it get to her mouth you can remove it with your fingers, but she will probably swallow it, which is fine, since it will come out in the baby's feces. This is what we practice, it's natural, so no chemicals, and the safest and effective technique, with cientific evidence suporting it. It's what I do with my tiny patients and what I tell mothers to do at home.

rub vicks on her feet when she sleeps and put socks on her feet. It will stop her from coughing during the night...idk how but it works!
