Anti-Maternity Wear

>> Sunday, August 30, 2009

I really don't want to buy maternity clothes.

I shouldn't say that so definitively, because now that I have this idea in my head that I can withstain, I know my stubborn-self will stay true to that desire until my belly button is screaming in pain.

There is hardly a shirt in my wardrobe that clings to my stomach. I have--and will--always be a flowy top kind of girl. I HATE the feeling of fabric clinging to my skin, of stiff jeans squeezing at my hips. I'd rather wear a loose dress and sandals or shorts and a breezy top any day of the week.

Thankfully, that means I have a closet full of baby doll tops, of swingy dresses and skirts, leggings and billowy tunics. So this means I don't have to waste money on clothes that accomplish the exact same thing and that I can only wear for a few months, right? I can save that money and instead splurge on some Christian Louboutin's and mouthwateringly cute baby band onesies?

I was really deadset on the idea until I got dressed for work yesterday.

I'm sitting here now dressed for brunch with my parents for their birthdays (happy 60th, dad! and 29th, mom!), wearing a maxi dress that I had pre-baby apocolaypse, and it hides my burgeoning bump and jiggly love handles quite well, thank you.

A few weeks ago I spent a little too much money at Urban Outfitters, investing in shirts like this in five colors, because it's exactly the kind of thing I've always worn and I'm pretty sure it will accommodate a belly full of twelve kids if I wanted.

I also bought the stretchiest, could turn any group of friends no matter how diverse in size into The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants skinny jeans, and I'm also pretty confident they'll fit later on, albeit with the top button undone.

But yesterday, I woke up to go to work with absolutely no desire to put on clothes (it was 2 in the morning), and grabbed my standard I-don't-feel-like-getting-dressed outfit: wide-legged black pants made out of sweatpants-material complete with an elasto-waist, and a plain white T-shirt.

It only took about 10 minutes of sitting at my desk before I realized that these pants, these once oh-so-comfy, can-fit-a-Thanksgiving-meal-waistline pants, were DIGGING into my navel. It took everything in me to not leave work early. They were THAT uncomfortable.

Now I'm wondering just how long I can make it sans-maternity wear. If I can't trust my trusty sweatpants, who can I trust?

Take an advice from an old pro (I am pregnant with babies no 6 and 7 right now) bite the bullet and get maternity pants. Tops are not essentials but pants that do not feel like you want to ripe them off are a must.

You might want to look into the Bella Band. http://www.ingridandisabel.com/ It's supposed to allow you to wear non-maternity clothes a little longer.

In my last days of pregnancy, not even my maternity pants fit. I wore only very large sweatpants. This made for an interesting outfit since non-maternity shirts weren't fitting either anymore and I only had business casual maternity shirts (for work).

Rhea-- I'm beginning to realize that I'll have to. Any suggestions for some that don't cost a fortune?

And Emily, I actually bought a Bella Band a few weeks ago. I wore it yesterday when I had to dress professionally for a meeting, and realized that my suit pants don't even pretend to button up.

One cheap fix that bought me a few weeks in my jeans was to use a rubberband (for hair) and loop it through the buttonhole and around the button.

Great post =) I'm on my second pregnancy in a row (literally, got pregnant 8 weeks after first baby. Whatever you do, TAKE BC AFTER BABY!) Maternity clothes are never fun. Good luck in your attempt to stay away. I just bought a REALLY cute pair of maternity skinny jeans @ Target. I have to say the advantage to to maternity pants is no buttons. Easy to pee. =)

i hardly had to buy any maternity clothes for my pregnancy... i wasn't really showing until halfway through, and then i actually liked to wear tight-ish tops to show off the bump! but i did invest in one pair of maternity jeans that got a LOT of wear. and i found that a few pairs of pants that had a pretty low rise lasted me right through... once the bump is big enough the pants sit under them and don't squish your stomach. sounds like you are good for tops, but splurging on a pair of maternity jeans that you love and will wear a LOT is worth it, in my opinion!

Old Navy maternity. They're not expensive, they look pretty cute, and they work pretty well for the post baby time. This is my third kid, and while I'm not wearing maternity pants yet, I had to buy some shirts. Because having my gtee shirt riding up to my navel makes me feel a little too trailer park.
